South Korea Industrial Production Spikes 3.4% In November

Industrial output in South Korea climbed 3.4 percent on month in November, Statistics Korea said on Thursday.

That followed the 1.7 percent contraction in October.

On a yearly basis, industrial production perked 4.6 percent after sliding 1.6 percent in the previous month.

The index of all industry production in November gained 1.6 percent on month and 4.6 percent on year.

The Manufacturing Production Index climbed 3.4 percent on month and 5.0 percent on year.

The Producer's Shipment Index added 2.4 percent on month and 3.7 percent on year in November. The Producer's Inventory Index fell 1.1 percent on month and 6.4 percent on year. The Production Capacity Index was flat on month and up 0.8 percent on year.

The Index of Capacity Utilization Rate gained 4.2 percent on month and 2.4 percent on year. The Manufacturing Average Capacity Utilization Rate was 73.5 percent, up 3.0 percentage points from the previous month.

The Index of Services added 0.1 percent on month and 2.5 percent on year in November. The Retail Sales Index eased 0.2 percent on month but gained 3.2 percent on year. The Equipment Investment Index jumped 5.9 percent on month and 10.2 percent on year.

The Domestic Machinery Shipment Index gained 11.3 percent on year in November. The value of Domestic Machinery Orders Received surged 17.1 percent on year.

The value of Construction Completed at constant prices was up 6.4 percent on month and 25.9 percent on year. The value of Construction Orders Received at current prices fell 9.7 percent on year.

The Composite Coincident Index added 0.3 percent on month. The Cyclical Component of Composite Coincident Index, which reflects current economic situations, was flat on month.

The Composite Leading Index advanced 0.3 percent on month. The Cyclical Component of Composite Leading Index, which predicts the turning point in business cycle, was flat on month.

Also on Wednesday, the bureau said that retail sales in South Korea were down 0.2 percent on month in November.

That follows the upwardly revised 5.5 percent spike in October (originally 5.2 percent).

On a yearly basis, retail sales climbed 3.2 percent after advancing an upwardly revised 2.5 percent in the previous month (originally 2.3 percent).
